This might seem very basic but it's a critical indicator that you are well connected with your horse. Trotting off and transitioning back to a walk sounds easy but very often, I see riders use a excessive amount of leg just to trot off and the same amount of hand to bring them back to a walk or the horse over reacts to the signal and stops.. The upwards and downward transitions must be effortless and there should be no change in body position or loss in forward motion.
